From The Bird's Cage - HRVRD

 

I first saw HRVRD late last summer when they were on tour opening for Say Anything and then I had another opportunity to see them at a little skate park here a few months ago and both times I saw them they absolutely killed it.  They play a weird style of indie rock that almost seems eerie and is creepy to watch live but they do it with such precision that you can't look away.  This album has songs that will make you think, songs that will relax you, songs that will creep you out, and songs that are impossible to get out of your head.

Old Homes - Shut In

Old Homes was the first release from Shut In which is a side project featuring Vincent Bennett of The Acacia Strain, Griffin Landa of Too Pure To Die, and Chris Cain ex Bury Your Dead.  It's been awhile since this came out but recently they announced that they'll be coming out with a full length later on this year.  This is a very short 4 song EP but I loved what I heard from it.  Even though all of the band members are in other bands this EP stands out from sounding anything like any of their other projects.  I'd consider it more dark hardcore with some melodic parts thrown in.  If you never heard about this or never gave it a listen definitely give it a spin or two.  It will not disappoint.

Atrocities - Take It Back!

This album probably brings me the most nostalgic memories of any hardcore album.  This is probably the first album that I ever listened to that I'd consider melodic hardcore.  Another huge first of this album is even though it's technically a Christian hardcore album it is still widely appreciated by everyone including me.  I don't know what it is about Christian music but it always bores the hell out of me.  This album I could listen to a million times though.  I don't think that there has been a band since Take It Back that has brought as much passion to music and I don't know if there will be for a long time.  Because they were never a huge band there's a good chance that you never listened to this album and if that's the case change it right now.  Although they may not be together anymore, their music needs to survive for a long time.

Melophobia - Cage The Elephant

 

This was my favorite rock release of 2013 and it didn't even get a single nod for a Grammy.  I've been a fan of Cage The Elephant for about 5 years now and with every release I feel like they just keep getting better and better.  The first time I heard this album I knew that it would go down as one of my favorite albums of all time.  I even had the pleasure of seeing them live for the third time on this album and it was way better than the previous two times I saw them.  If you've heard of this band before but felt like they weren't your thing try to give them another chance.  I think this album might change your mind.

United States Of Mind - Take Offense

This album rips and anyone that doesn't think so is wrong.  One of the best releases of last year and that is barely even debatable.  I don't even need to say much about this album other than that if you're a fan of hardcore you will like this album.  There's a little bit of something for everyone in this album.

Corroding Kings - Swamps

Swamps became one of my favorite hardcore bands from the first time that I listened to this EP.  Since then they've released two more EPs and have been touring almost constantly.  I believe that these guys are one of the hardest working bands in hardcore and they really deserve more credit than they get.  Every show that they play they give it 100% and never leave anyone feeling disappointed.  This was their first EP and it is full of raw passionate aggression.  This is one of my personal favorite albums and everyone needs to give it a chance.
