Hungry Hands- American Standards

For a band formerly signed to Victory Records, American Standards’ new EP “Hungry Hands” proves that the band escaped from the infamous label’s toxic touch alive and well enough to produce one of the year’s most impressive efforts. The three song EP runs at just under 10 minutes, and the band does not waste a second on frivolities from the opening riff of “Casket Party”, a song characterized by the bouncing instrumentation of the verses and two well-placed half time mosh riffs that will make you inexplicably furious. Frantic guitar riffs and dissonant chords dominate the EP, causing the listener to draw obvious comparisons to titans of the genre such as Refused and Converge, but by no means is this band yet another face in the ranks of the 90s hardcore revival. American Standards relies more heavily on vocalist Brandon Kellum’s abrasive screaming and poignant lyricism as opposed to the overbearing 90s-metalcore-beatdown-party approach that so many of their peers have adopted and yet had no trouble writing bone crushing riffs into all three of the songs. The true power of American Standards’ explosive EP lies in pileup-inducing call and response vocals, gang chants, and a rhythm section that will make even the tamest punk spin kick a child. Mile-a-minute blast beat patterns give way to visceral mosh riffs that will rattle your teeth as the crunchy guitar tone allows the EP to retain an air of clarity that many hardcore bands shy away from in favor of walls of distortion. While this may seem like a nuance, American Standards refreshingly only cranks the gain once, breaking out thick, fuzzy guitars for a doom metal inspired outro in “Circus Rats”. The band’s creativity is on full display in the latter half of “Circus Rats” and throughout “The Complex Death Machine”. The strangely soothing piano and guitar duet on “Circus Rats” gives the listener a brilliantly brief moment to rest from the onslaught, before grinding its way to a close with a neck-breaking beatdown. “The Complex Death Machine” is a perfect end to the EP, pairing mixed time signatures and a hellishly powerful chorus with a melodic and haunting outro that showcases Kellum’s abilities as a lyricist, as his spoken word builds into aching and pained shrieks.

However, despite their willingness to depart from the norms of contemporary hardcore, there really is not anything on this EP that has not been done before. The band sticks true to a formula pioneered by the aforementioned Refused, but that is really their only offense. And in truth, the songs are so attention-grabbing and enjoyable that it is incredibly hard to fault them or consider this a particularly applicable criticism, especially when one considers how many bands have failed outright to capture the intensity and honesty of the “new noise” that Refused embodied. Although I do not believe that a three song EP is substantial enough to warrant Album of the Year buzz, “Hungry Hands” is a special release that deserves a nomination for an EPOTY award, should one exist. The EP and the rest of their music is available on their Bandcamp for free, so there is no excuse not to download it.

The New Sidewalk - Such Gold

I haven't written a review in about 8 months now so I apologize if this is a little sketchy.  This is Such Gold's newest album and upon first listen I realized that it was the best material they have ever released.  A lot of fuck boy pop punk kids say that Such Gold isn't worth listening to past Pedestals and anyone who says that obviously just doesn't like actual musical talent.  With every album Such Gold pushes the boundaries and comes up with more progressive, more technical, and more bad ass parts.  One of the most stand out performances of this album is the way that the vocals are delivered.  I couldn't tell with Misadventures whether or not Such Gold would try to take a more melodic hardcore path or end up bringing it back to pop punk but with this album they ended up paving a new path.  The vocals are delivered extremely clean in some parts and are almost never taken into a full scream.  This shows me that he has become more confident with his voice and is letting the music make up for any aggression that the vocals have lost.  This is the first album that they have released as a four piece and that left me expecting the guitar to be lacking compared to their previous work but again, I couldn't have been more wrong.  Every song fucking rips.  I honestly have no idea how it is possible to play such technical pieces with such strange timing and be able to sing at the same time.  Whatever it is they are doing now is working and I haven't been able to stop listening to this for weeks now.  If you haven't checked it out yet you need to get on it immediately.

Turn Blue - The Black Keys

gallery_10295_2_9746.png

Sorry for the lack of updates again.  It's finals week and I've had no free time at all other than to sleep and eat.  I've always been a fan of bluesier rock so hopefully this will be a solid album.  I know a lot of people are comparing it to Jack White's Lazaretto which comes out on June 10th, but in my opinion no one will ever stand up to any album of his.  With that being said I'm hoping this is a great album so that I have something new to listen to for awhile. -Ian

Earlier Today...

We hit our 10,000th page view.  I made this blog one day just because I was bored and I thought that posting links to an organized blog would be easier than constantly sending links to friends who are looking for them.  It's fun to be able to write on here when I get the time and I'm sorry that the reviews have been shorter recently.  It's hard to keep up with this and college at the same time.  With that being said I still want this blog to be more social for people.  Send me messages on facebook at facebook.com/downwiththedevilmusic for albums that you want to see on here or if you want to submit your own band.  Or even just drop a comment in one of our posts and we'll try to get to it.  Thanks again to anyone who has checked this out and shown that you give a shit about the same type of music that I do.

I've said before that I love Modern Baseball and I just got to see them live the other day so I can confirm that they are an all around great band.  If you're into the new "emo revival" thing or just like solid music definitely check them out.  They've got great lyrics on top of songs that easily get stuck in your head and all of them are ridiculously relateable to pretty much everyone's life.  They just did a Daytrotter Session with a few of their songs and it's perfect for anyone who's already a fan of them or anyone who still wants to get into them.

This is the 100th post for the blog so I was hoping that something huge would come out so that we could post it and make a big deal but there hasn't really been anything new coming out in the past few days so I'm posting this album.  This is one of my favorite albums because it really shows when Counterparts grew up and started taking their music more seriously.  It's a complete night and day difference from their first album and shows off a new mindset towards their songwriting.  I listened to this album on repeat for years and I really think that anyone who is a fan of hardcore/melodic hardcore really needs to check it out.  Some of the most heartfelt songs that you will ever hear.  -Ian

Talon Of The Hawk - The Front Bottoms

Everyone has been telling me to listen to this band for the past year or so and since I'm stubborn I never did.  I had the opportunity to see them once and on my way to the show found out it was sold out so that again kept me from hearing them.  Yesterday Say Anything announced their new tour and The Front Bottoms is their main support throughout the entire tour so I finally decided to go ahead and download their music, and of course, I love it.  Totally part of the "Emo Revival" but that's completely okay with me.  Even if the "Emo Revival" is a trend, it's a trend that I love.  I've always been a fan of emo music and this album is an awesome addition to my collection.  If you still think of kids with black straightened hair and skin tight clothes when you think of emo then you need to listen to this album and realize that they were just a really shitty scene that appeared out of nowhere.  This album is ridiculously relatable and seriously catchy.  If you're an idiot like I am and haven't checked them out yet, end that now. -Ian(I always forget to sign my name)

Gospel- Fireworks

In honor of Fireworks releasing their long anticipated album “Oh, Common Life”, I thought it would be an appropriate time to review what I believe to be one of the definitive albums in contemporary pop-punk. “Gospel” was released almost 3 years ago to overwhelmingly positive critical reception. Prior to “Gospel”, Fireworks had existed as a New Found Glory-esque easycore band and their previous releases never garnered much attention in the scene, but “Gospel” completely changed people’s perception of the band. Fireworks unveiled surprisingly impressive guitar work, pop inspired melodies, and a less-nasally, improved version of frontman Dave Mackinder before suddenly disappearing after playing Warped Tour 2012. However, despite their unfortunately long hiatus, “Gospel” began to gain a reputation as essential listening for newcomers to the genre. Mackinder’s lyrics are sincere and relatable, and his ability to make fascinating stories out of mundane problems is one of the most enjoyable parts of the album. To anyone who has not listened to Fireworks, or are trying to understand the hype around “Oh, Common Life”, make sure to listen to this album. I honestly believe that in 10 years, this will be considered a classic.

I again, didn't get a chance to listen to this yet.  Fireworks is a cool band that I personally have never been able to get very into, but I think that's just because I never really have given them the chance.  I saw them on a tour awhile ago with The Wonder Years and I remember that they killed it.  I'm seeing them again later this week on another tour with The Wonder Years so I'm sure after seeing that I'll be mad at myself for not giving them a solid listen.  Anyway, check out their new album. Supermodel - Foster The People

Foster The People is sick and I've really enjoyed them ever since they first showed up around 2011.  To anyone that thinks of them as that band that only has the song Pumped Up Kicks then you've obviously never given them a solid listen.  Their first album Torches was amazing and this album is a really solid follow up to it.  It's got a really nice and easy vibe that's good to listen to if you're just chilling around.  Foster The People is really good at adding catchy hooks that will spend way too much time stuck in your head and you'll find yourself humming them at the least convenient of times.  Check this album out because I'm sure it will end up being a massive success this year.

Jar- Daylight

For a band that often gets lumped in with the so called “emo revival”, I don’t feel that Daylight gets the credit they deserve for the impact they’ve had on the scene. Mostly because they aren’t and emo band, rather the leaders in popularizing grunge among a new generation of listeners. Jar, Daylight’s most recent full length album, could easily pass as a Nirvana reunion album. Fat, distorted guitars pound out simple but effective riffs while accented by very minimal but tasteful lead work. However, the song quality isn’t as consistent as it could be and some songs fall short of the expectations set at the beginning of the album by “Sponge” and “Life in a Jar”. Fortunately, the majority of the album is fantastically written and is definitely worthy of multiple playthroughs. If you want some variety in your collection of emo/pop-punk/indie jams but don’t want to give up the depression, then this album is for you.

Tigers Jaw- Tigers Jaw

Anyone who knows me well will tell you that I have a tendency to get into bands years after everyone else has. For me, Tigers Jaw is yet another one of those bands, and I have been looping the self-titled album an unnecessary amount over the past month to make up for lost time. Tigers Jaw have become a staple of the pop-punk/emo scene and their constantly increasing popularity is often pointed to as evidence of the “emo revival” alongside the resurgence of emo stalwarts such as Brand New and Even Weiss and his infinite collection of projects. One listen to Tigers Jaw’s self-titled is all the proof you should need that they belong in the same breath as the two aforementioned icons. From the opening riff of “The Sun” to the soothing acoustic closer “Never Saw It Coming”, the album packs endlessly upbeat melodies punctuated by some of the saddest damn lyrics you’ll find in modern emo. Ex-frontman Adam McIlwee showcases his unique talent of driving home poignant lyrics through his monotone and raw singing style. But as any Tigers Jaw fan will attest, the vocal melodies created between McIlwee, Brianna Collins (keyboards), and Ben Walsh (guitar) is what sets them apart from others in their genre. In my opinion, this album is still the best that Tigers Jaw has put out, which is quite the feat considering their history of consistently stellar releases. Miraculously, after losing 3/5 of the band (including McIlwee), Brianna and Ben have managed to resurrect Tigers Jaw and have recently announced they finished work on a new album, although little more has been revealed. In honor of this accomplishment, I highly suggest you download this album and everything else they have put out to prepare yourself for the next release, I can assure you it’s going to be fantastic.

My friend just told me to listen to this and I'm listening now for the first time.  I've never given Seahaven a chance before but this 7" is enough to make me go back and check them out.  Every song has a really low-key relaxed vibe that will be nice to listen to on a late summer night.  The whole feel of this is just really nice when you're looking to listen to something to relax.  If you're like me and have never given Seahaven a chance give these three songs a quick listen.

Glamour Kills 2012 Tour Compilation

Posted Image

I just saw this pop up somewhere and I remembered how much I used to like to listen to this compilation.  It's really cool because each band that was on the tour covered another band on the tour and some of the songs turned out really cool.  The Story So Far show off their hardcore roots in this and they pull it off really well.  And Into It Over It's cover of Don't Let Me Cave In is hauntingly great.

3. Transit - Resent & Resistance
4. The Story So Far - Wrightsville Beach

Manifest Decimation - Power Trip

This album rips and there's really no getting around that.  What's so cool about Power Trip is both fans of hardcore and metal completely agree on them being one of the coolest bands around.  Everything these guys put out is insane and keeps me head banging from the second the album starts to the second it ends.  Power Trip is blowing up really fast and I'd expect them to be a pretty big name in the hardcore/metal scene within the next few years.  I can guarantee whatever it is that brought you to liking hardcore or metal is in this album.  Whether it's huge guitar riffs that shred across the entire neck of the guitar, fast drums that keep you banging your head, or ridiculous vocal flows that bring out every emotion ever possible out of you it's in this album.  And it is great. -Ian

Madre Mia Gracias Por Los Dias - Xibalba

Xibalba in my opinion is one of the hardest bands out there these days.  I first heard this album a few years ago and immediately recognized that these guys would make a really solid name for themselves really quickly just for the fact that they were on a next level of beatdown hardcore and it was really easy to distinguish their sound from the rest of the genre.  This whole album is full of slow down-tempo riffs that make you want to completely lose your mind.  Throw in some of the angriest lyrics you'll ever hear that switch from English to Spanish just to give it an even harder edge and it became one of my favorite albums of 2011.  To anyone that loves really pissed off music if you've slept on Xibalba you need to stop now.  -Ian

The Things We Carry - Have Heart

Have Heart is one of the most influential bands in hardcore of all time.  This is straight up music with a message and that's the exact reason why they were able to create such a devoted fan base that is still around even after all of these years.  I like to go back and listen to this album every once in awhile just to remind myself what the kind of music that I want to create is.  Listening to this album you'll hear some of the most inspired music of all time backed with an extremely positive message.  99% of the time I'm not a fan of hardcore that is always positive just because I have a tough time at shows watching people get violent while screaming about how much they love each other, but Have Heart is a completely different story.  I would do just about anything to go back in time and see these guys. -Ian

From Under The Cork Tree - Fall Out Boy

This shit is classic and if you don't already have this in your collection then you have a problem.  This post is just for anyone that has somehow put off listening to this album and has been stuck living in a cave.  Even if you're not a fan of pop punk you need to have this album because I'm still yet to meet anyone that doesn't like this album.  Listen to this because it's a million times better than anything they're putting out now.

Shake - Diamond Youth

Diamond Youth is an alternative rock band that features members of Trapped Under Ice, Turnstile, and Terror. Despite being known from a completely different scene of music, they've really begun to make a name for themselves in the alternative music scene.  Shake is a cool EP that is nice to groove to and has pretty decent replay value.  Diamond Youth describe themselves as a mix of the Foo Fighters, Weezer, and Queens Of The Stone Age but say that their inspiration goes as far back as listening to The Beach Boys.  If you're looking for something a little different to listen to give these guys a try.

Letters Home - Defeater

Defeater is the band you want to listen to if you're into good melodic hardcore with some solid meaning behind every song, or if you want to curl up in a ball and cry.  Don't get me wrong, I do like Defeater, but if you're in a bad mood and you start listening to them you're probably going to end up crying.  Last summer at TIHC when Defeater played a speech in between songs was enough to cause the entire crowd of people to get absolutely silent and to tear up.  Really solid music written by some really solid musicians, and really depressing lyrics written by a really depressed dude. -Ian (I keep forgetting to sign my name)

Self Titled - Bad Things

Free MP3 Download Bad Things – Bad Things (Deluxe Edition) (2014)

These guys were just on The Tonight Show and I haven't heard anything other than the song they played on there.  It was kind of cool and sort of reminded me of The Cure so if you're into them or like "synth rock" you should check these guys out.  Shaun White is in this band so that's kind of cool too.

Music 4 Tngrs - Chester French

I've posted Chester French before but this album is great and needs to be listened to more.  It's got some great songs for if you're trying to drop some panties and it's also got some nice songs to just chill to.  The guys in Chester French are musical geniuses that in my opinion are some of the best producers in the business and they get looked over way too often.  This album has some guest spots from Travis Barker, Pharrell, and Pusha T that really help to put it to the next level.  It's been out for a few years but I feel like it never really got the recognition that it deserved.  Give it a listen.

Heavy Head- Elder Brother

The lovechild of The Story So Far’s Kevin Geyer and Daybreaker’s Dan Rose, Elder Brother is a brand new indie band that has been generating a lot of buzz in the scene, for good reason. The duo’s music is catchy and creative, a statement that anyone who heard the first three singles (Throw Me to the Wolves, In My Bones, and Pennsylvania) will attest to. Although the band is officially still only a two-piece, Elder Brother was assisted in the studio by Gus Pesce of Defeater and Matthew and Charles Vincent of The American Scene. The American Scene’s influence is quite obvious, especially through Matthew Vincent’s bass lines. The album isn’t out until March 11th, but Elder Brother streamed it today, so there’s no excuse to starting jamming it now. If you like The American Scene or Kevin Geyer’s acoustic stuff, I guarantee you will like this album.

Strangers Only- My Ticket Home

Strangers Only- My Ticket Home

“Puke Rock or Die” has become My Ticket Home’s battle cry ever since they released ‘Strangers Only’ in September, and to be honest, it’s the most accurate label I can put on the quartet from Columbus, Ohio. Abandoning the chugging, effeminate vocals, and synthesizer use that plagued their first release ‘To Create a Cure’, ‘Strangers Only’ punches you in the mouth immediately with grungy drop tuned guitar work and squealing harmonics that would make Nirvana and Rage Against the Machine simultaneously proud. But, no matter how catchy the guitar work is, the real star of the album is the vocal tandem of Nick Giumenti and Derek Blevins, who also serve as the band’s bassist and guitarist, respectively. Lyrically and rhythmically, the vocal flows are catchy and creative, relying much more on Giumenti’s powerful screams with both Giumenti’s and Blevin’s much matured clean singing playing a supporting role. My biggest issue with this band is that despite their accessibility to anyone in the hardcore genre, they mostly tour with post-hardcore bands. Hopefully, if enough people realize they are the real deal, they will tour with some respected hardcore acts, because this album was written for pile-ups and a violent pit.

New Writer For The Blog

As of tomorrow or whenever he decides to quit being a lazy ass, my buddy Jack will start making blog posts too.  Up until now every post has been made by myself, Ian.  We'll start signing our names at the end of posts just so you know who's doing what.  I've played music with this guy over the past year or so, so I know his music taste and I know that it will add to the blog.  Make sure to welcome Jack and check out his posts when he gets to it.

Pedestals - Such Gold

If you're going to download Stand Tall you might as well get Pedestals too. This one is a banger too and I still listen to it all the time.  I love Such Gold so I'm partial to pretty much everything that they put out.  But I give a big thumbs up to this EP too so if you like the other stuff you've heard go ahead and get this.

Stand Tall EP - Such Gold

This EP just makes me feel like it's summer and that is pretty much saving me from going insane this winter.  Such Gold has always been one of the only pop punk bands that I can consistently listen to and it all started with this EP.  I know that Such Gold isn't huge now, but they're definitely a lot bigger than they were when this came out.  If there are any fans of Such Gold out there that haven't heard this then stop fucking up and listen to it.  And to anyone that is a fan of pop punk with more of a punk side to a pop side (that's the best way I can describe it) then listen to this.  I still love it so there's a good chance you will too.
